An animated SVG logo

A small brief with tight rules: one SVG logo for "Kestrel", a fictional fast delivery company, animated with CSS or SMIL only, playing once on load in under three seconds and then holding still, with no JavaScript and no external fonts. It tests whether a model can design a mark, time a short sequence and land it cleanly. Watch the first two seconds, then look at where each logo settles: the resting frame is the logo a company would actually use.

The prompt, word for word

Design an animated SVG logo for "Kestrel", a fictional delivery company that prides itself on speed. The animation should play once on load and last under 3 seconds, then hold on the final logo. Give one self-contained SVG file (CSS or SMIL animation inside the SVG, no JavaScript, no external fonts).
Every answer runs live, in a sandboxed frame. Click into one to play with it.

How each model did

ModelOur notesChecksTimeOutput tokensCost
GPT-6.1 Sol An orange origami bird swoops in with speed lines, then "Kestrel" in plain Arial fades up with "DELIVERY AT SPEED" and a short underline drawn beneath. Tidy and well timed (done by about 2.4 seconds), but the wordmark is small for the card and the type is generic. The fastest and cheapest answer. 4 of 4 35 s 1,744

Claude Opus 5.5 An angular orange-and-navy kestrel streaks in on long trails, then a heavy italic "KESTREL" drops in letter by letter with an orange underline and "SWIFT · PRECISE · DELIVERED" below. The mark and wordmark have real character, but the underline runs right up to the card's edge, so the final lockup looks slightly unbalanced. 4 of 4 75 s 7,232

Claude Fable 5.1 Our pick A dark navy card: an amber swept-wing bird flies in from the left with speed lines, the letters of "KESTREL" slide in one by one, then a gold rule and "SWIFT DELIVERY" settle beneath. Every element is aligned and the motion ends cleanly before 2 seconds. The most polished resting logo, but also the most expensive answer by far. 4 of 4 199 s 14,658

Gemini 3.8 Flash An ambitious dark card with blue glass-like shards, a sheen sweep and "HYPERSPEED COURIER", but the layout breaks: the CSS slide-in overwrites the wordmark's position, so "KESTREL" ends up jammed against the left edge on top of the mark, leaving the right half of the card empty. The name is still legible through the overlap, just barely.

Muse Spark 1.3 Speed lines draw in, an abstract orange-and-white chevron mark flies into place, then a wide white "KESTREL" fades up with an orange bar and "SWIFT DELIVERY". Clean, centred and readable, though the mark is just stacked shapes and does not suggest a bird. 4 of 4 45 s 3,811

Grok 4.7 An app-icon badge in which a bird lands, then "KESTREL" is drawn on stroke by stroke in a rounded monoline with a gold swoosh and "PRIORITY DELIVERY" in green. The word is large and clear, but the bird is a round white shape with a yellow beak that reads more as a chick or a gull than a falcon. 4 of 4 471 s 22,714

Kimi K3 A faceted orange kestrel dives in with ghosted copies, its trail drawing out into a long orange line that underlines an italic "KESTREL", with "SPEED, DELIVERED." below. Turning the bird's trail into the underline is a neat idea; the bird itself is a heavy wedge that is hard to read at a glance. 4 of 4 361 s 24,687

Qwen3.8 Max (0902) A dark panel where a brush-stroke orange kestrel banks in and "KESTREL" draws itself letter by letter in hand-built monoline paths, finishing with a fading rule and "SPEED, DELIVERED." The lettering is well made, but it is a fixed 720 by 320 graphic, so in the preview it sits small in the top-left corner rather than filling the frame. 4 of 4 692 s 23,467

DeepSeek V4.1 Flash A simple amber arrow-like bird darts in with fading trails, then a bold navy "KESTREL" pops in letter by letter over an orange brush underline. No card or tagline, but it is clear, finishes by about 2.1 seconds and costs a few cents. 4 of 4 94 s 28,313

Mistral Large 4 An orange bird with dark navy wings crosses a pale circle with speed dashes, then an italic "KESTREL" slides in and an underline draws out into an arrow, with "EXPRESS DELIVERY" below. A well-balanced, conventional lockup; the bird's wings form an awkward cross over its body. 4 of 4 711 s 36,852

One answer per model, at each model's default settings unless the card says otherwise, through OpenRouter. If an answer ran out of room or stopped short, we asked again with more room, then with thinking off, and say so. We tried every answer, with Claude Opus 5.5 running the checks and drafting the notes; it is an Anthropic model, so we check its calls on Claude answers ourselves. This is a quick look, not a benchmark: run it again and every answer will differ. For measured results, see our benchmarks.

What we checked, by trying each answer ourselves: Animates on load; Finishes within 3 seconds and holds on the final logo; The final logo reads "Kestrel" clearly; No JavaScript and no external fonts. A partial pass counts as half.

Verdict

Every model produced a single working SVG that animates on load, finishes well inside three seconds and then holds: frames at 2.6, 3.5 and 6 seconds were pixel-identical for all ten, and none used JavaScript or external fonts. The differences are in the resting logo. Claude Fable 5.1 has the most finished lockup, a clean amber bird and evenly spaced "KESTREL" on navy, but it took 199 seconds and cost $0.73. Claude Opus 5.5 has the most characterful mark and lettering for $0.15 in 75 seconds, let down only by an underline that runs to the card edge. For value, GPT-6.1 Sol ($0.018, 35 seconds) and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash ($0.034) both give clear, usable logos.

The one real failure is Gemini 3.8 Flash: its CSS animation overrides the wordmark's position, so the name lands on top of the mark at the left edge. Qwen's logo is good but renders at a fixed size in the corner of the frame, and Grok's bird looks more like a gull than a kestrel.
