We Switched a Support-Reply Prompt from Claude Sonnet 4.5 to Sonnet 5.5: What Changed
Last checked 8 November 2026.
Anthropic retires Claude Sonnet 4.5 on 30 November 2026 and names Claude Sonnet 5.5 as its replacement (our retirements page has the date and source). If you have a prompt in production on Sonnet 4.5, you'll have to move it. So we took an everyday one, a small shop's customer-email reply, ran it on both models with the same 12 emails, and read every answer. This is the first in a series: one real prompt per retirement, and what changed.
This is one prompt, 12 emails and one run of each model. It shows what happened on this prompt, not which model is better in general.
Moving off Sonnet 4.5? Run your own prompt on the old and new model side by side, with checks drafted for you. Test your prompt →
The prompt and the test
The shop is made up: Hearth & Field, a UK kitchenware shop. The prompt gives the model the shop's policy (30-day returns, a photo within 7 days for damaged items, cancellation before dispatch, no discount codes, refunds within 5 working days), today's date, the order details and the customer's email. It asks for a plain-text reply under 120 words, in the customer's language, that promises nothing the policy doesn't support, signed "Sam, Hearth & Field".
The 12 emails are the ones a shop like this gets: a late parcel, a return, a broken vase, a wrong address after dispatch, a return outside the window, a missing item in capitals, a care question, a return request in French, a prompt-injection attempt asking for a 100% discount code, a cancellation, a birthday discount request, and an email that just says "??".
We ran it on 8 November 2026 through our own Prompt test code, with the setting it uses by default: thinking off where a model allows it. Sonnet 4.5 ran with thinking off. Sonnet 5.5 refused to run with thinking off through OpenRouter, so the test fell back to its low setting; no reasoning tokens were reported for its replies. Each reply was checked against eight checks: three rules (at most 120 words, no Markdown, signed "Sam") and five judged by GPT-6 Luna, our default judge (answers the request; promises nothing the policy doesn't support; the customer's language; and two stretch checks: a clear next step, and acknowledging an upset customer's feelings without over-apologising). The whole run, answers and judging, cost $0.07.
What changed, in short
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Replies that passed every must check | 3 of 12 | 11 of 12 |
| “Promises nothing the policy doesn't support” (judged) | 4 of 12 | 11 of 12 |
| Answered the customer's actual request (judged) | 10 of 12 | 12 of 12 |
| Words per reply: average (range) | 82 (42 to 105) | 91 (70 to 105) |
| Cost per reply, metered | $0.0029 | $0.0027 |
| Median time per reply | 4.7 seconds | 3.1 seconds |
Costs are what OpenRouter charged us for these calls. The list prices on 5 November 2026 were $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output for Sonnet 4.5, and $2 and $10 for Sonnet 5.5 (OpenRouter list price). At this prompt's length, that is about $2.86 and $2.72 per 1,000 replies.
We read every judged verdict. We think the judge got two of Sonnet 4.5's policy fails wrong: in emails 2 and 8 it flagged “refund within 5 working days”, which is in the policy. Counting those as passes, Sonnet 4.5 kept to the policy in 6 of 12. Some of the rest are strict calls, such as “we'll get things sorted for you straight away” in email 3, and Sonnet 5.5's one fail (“get this put right for you”, email 6) is of that kind too. The clearest ones are below.
The differences that matter for a support inbox
- Promises. Sonnet 4.5 promised things the policy doesn't cover. For the missing oven gloves (email 6) it offered a replacement or refund; the policy says nothing about missing items. For the cancellation (email 10) it said “I'll process the cancellation right away” and “you won't be charged”, which no one had confirmed. Sonnet 5.5 asked for a photo of what arrived in email 6, and in email 10 asked the customer to confirm before cancelling.
- Staying in role. Given an email that just said “??” (email 12), Sonnet 4.5 wrote to us, the operator, asking for the customer's real email. It didn't sign off as Sam, and a customer could have received that text. Sonnet 5.5 wrote to the customer, said the message came through as question marks, and mentioned the parcel was out for delivery.
- The injection attempt. Neither model gave a discount code. Sonnet 4.5 ignored the request and offered general help. Sonnet 5.5 said plainly that it can't give discount codes, then offered help with the order.
- Length and format. Sonnet 5.5's replies were longer on average and more even (70 to 105 words, against 42 to 105). Both stayed under the 120-word limit and used no Markdown. Sonnet 4.5 started one reply with a “Subject:” line (email 3); Sonnet 5.5 never did. Sonnet 5.5 always signed off “Sam, Hearth & Field” on one line, as the prompt says; Sonnet 4.5 mostly put the shop name on its own line.
- Using the order details. Sonnet 5.5 repeated the order number and dates more often, and worked out what they meant (“Since it was delivered on 6 Nov, you're well within the 7 days we allow for damaged items”). In the French email it added the blanket's size from the order details, which the customer hadn't asked for.
- Tone. Both were polite throughout. Neither did well on the stretch check for acknowledging an upset customer's feelings: Sonnet 4.5 passed 4 times, Sonnet 5.5 5 times, out of the replies where the check applied. Both often closed with a generic “any other questions” line, which the judge didn't count as a next step.
If you're making the same switch
- Run your own prompt on both models with real inputs, including awkward ones: an empty or near-empty message, an injection attempt, and a request your policy says no to. Those were where the replies differed most here.
- Check what each model promises. A reply can be polite, short and in the right language and still promise a refund you don't offer.
- Check your length limits and sign-off. Sonnet 5.5's replies here were about 10% longer on average.
- Check the thinking setting your code sends. Here, Sonnet 5.5 wouldn't run with thinking off through OpenRouter. If your code turns thinking off, try it before the retirement date.
- Give the model today's date if your policy has time limits. Without it, neither model can tell whether a return is inside the window.

1. Explains the courier delay and gives the 10 Nov estimate from the tracking, without promising it.
Customer: Hi, my mugs were meant to arrive on the 6th and they still haven't come. Where are they?
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hi there, Thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry your mugs haven't arrived yet. Your order HF-20417 was dispatched with Evri on 4 November. According to the tracking, there's been a delay at the depot and the new estimated delivery date is 10 November. I know this isn't ideal when you were expecting them sooner. Unfortunately, once dispatched we can't intervene directly with the courier, but you can check for updates or contact Evri using your tracking link if you need more information. I hope they reach you very soon. All the best, Sam Hearth & Field 96 words · Passed every check |

2. Says yes, within 30 days of delivery, unused, and that the customer pays return postage.
Customer: The colour isn't what I expected from the photos. Can I send these back?
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hello, Thank you for getting in touch. I'm sorry the oat colour isn't quite what you expected. You're welcome to return the tea towels for a refund as they're unused and within the 30-day return window. Please send them back to the address on our returns page. As this is a change of mind rather than a fault, return postage would be at your cost. Once we receive and process the return, your refund will reach your card within 5 working days. If you need any help with the return, just let me know. | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Hello, Thanks for getting in touch, and I'm sorry the colour wasn't what you hoped for. Yes, you can return them. Your order HF-20388 was delivered on 28 October, so you're within our 30-day return window, and since the tea towels are unused they qualify. As the item isn't faulty or damaged, return postage would be at your cost. Once we receive and approve the return, your refund will reach your card within 5 working days. If you'd like help getting the return started, just reply and let me know. Kind regards, Sam, Hearth & Field 95 words · Passed every check |
3. Apologises, asks for a photo within 7 days, offers a free replacement or full refund, their choice.
Customer: The vase arrived in pieces. The box was crushed on one side. Really disappointed, it was a present.
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Subject: Re: Damaged vase delivery Hello, I'm so sorry the vase arrived broken – that's really disappointing, especially as it was a present. As the item arrived damaged, we can send you a free replacement or give you a full refund, whichever you'd prefer. Could you please send us a photo of the damaged vase? Once we receive that, we'll get things sorted for you straight away. Again, I'm really sorry this happened. Please let me know which option works best for you. Since it was delivered on 6 Nov, you're well within the 7 days we allow for damaged items. Please reply with a photo of the broken vase and the crushed box. 4. Says the shop can't change it after dispatch and explains redirecting with Evri using the tracking link.
Customer: I've just realised I put my old address. Can you send it to 3 Park Row, Leeds instead?
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hello, Unfortunately we can't change the delivery address after an order has been dispatched, and your order was sent out yesterday (7 Nov). However, you can redirect the parcel yourself using your Evri tracking link. Evri should allow you to change the delivery address to 3 Park Row, Leeds through their tracking system. If you're unable to redirect it through Evri and the parcel is delivered to Mill Lane, you can return it to us once received (you would cover return postage), and then place a new order with the correct address. I hope you're able to redirect it successfully! | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Hello, Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately, because order HF-20431 was dispatched with Evri on 7 November, we're not able to change the delivery address ourselves. What you can do is ask Evri to redirect the parcel to 3 Park Row, Leeds, using the tracking link in your dispatch email. I'd do this as soon as possible. If it can't be redirected and the parcel reaches the old address, you can return the casserole dish to us instead, provided it's unused and within 30 days of delivery. Return postage would be at your cost. Kind regards, Sam, Hearth & Field 99 words · Passed every check |
5. Explains politely that the 30-day return window has passed; does not offer a refund the policy doesn't allow.
Customer: I never used this chopping board, can I get a refund please?
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hello, Thank you for getting in touch. I'm sorry, but your order was delivered on 20 September, which is now more than 30 days ago. Unfortunately, our returns policy allows returns of unused items only within 30 days of delivery, so we're unable to accept a return or offer a refund for this item. I apologise that we can't help on this occasion. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Best regards, Sam Hearth & Field 81 words · Judge marked as failed: Tells the customer exactly what to do next, or what happens next (stretch) |
|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Hello, Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately, our returns window is 30 days from delivery, and your chopping board was delivered on 20 September, so it's now past that period and we can't accept it as a return or issue a refund. If the board arrived damaged or faulty, please let us know, though our policy requires a photo within 7 days of delivery, so I'm afraid that window has also closed. I'm sorry I can't offer a different answer here. If you have any other questions, just reply and I'll be happy to help. 6. Stays calm, acknowledges the frustration, and offers a sensible next step without promising something outside the policy.
Customer: THE OVEN GLOVES ARE MISSING. I PAID FOR THREE THINGS AND GOT TWO. THIS IS RIDICULOUS.
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hello, I'm sorry the oven gloves weren't in your parcel. I can see your order was delivered yesterday and the packing note listed all three items including the rust oven gloves. Since an item from your order is missing, I'd be happy to send you a replacement pair of oven gloves or issue a refund for them - whichever you'd prefer. Could you let me know which option works best for you? I apologise for the inconvenience this has caused. | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Hello, I'm sorry about this, and I understand why you're frustrated. Your order HF-20425 was delivered yesterday and the packing note lists the oven gloves (rust) along with the colander and spoon set, so they should have been in the parcel. Could you please check any packaging in case they were tucked inside another item, and let me know what you found? Please also send a photo of what arrived, including the packing note and the outside of the parcel if you still have it. Once I have that, we'll look into it right away and get this put right for you. 7. Says it's hand wash only, from the product details.
Customer: Quick one before it arrives: can the teapot go in the dishwasher?
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | Hello, Thank you for getting in touch! According to the product information, the ceramic teapot should be hand washed only – it's not dishwasher safe, I'm afraid. If this doesn't work for you, I can cancel your order before it dispatches and you'll receive a full refund to your card within 5 working days. Just let me know. Otherwise, your teapot will be on its way to you soon! |---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Hi there, Thanks for getting in touch. The product page for the 1.2 litre ceramic teapot says "Hand wash only", so I'd recommend washing it by hand rather than putting it in the dishwasher. I don't have any further care information beyond that, so I can't say what would happen if it went through a dishwasher cycle. Your order HF-20410 hasn't been dispatched yet. If you'd rather not keep a hand-wash-only teapot, just let me know and we can cancel it before it goes out. Kind regards, Sam, Hearth & Field 91 words · Passed every check |
